Kirk Gibson Memorial League News Article | | | Wednesday, August 3rd, 1977: Renko Mows Down San Diego in No-Hitter The Seattle Pilots were only hoping for a solid outing from Steve Renko, instead the 32-year-old pitcher tossed a no-hitter against the San Diego Bandits.
Using a brilliant mix of offspeed pitches and fastballs, Renko kept the San Diego hitters off balance all game long in the 4-0 victory at Sicks' Stadium. The Seattle hurler fanned 4 and walked 0 in his record-making performance.
"I felt pretty good throughout the game," he said after his spectacular outing for the Pilots. "As I was going into the ninth inning, I was not nervous. I knew I had a chance to do something special."
That something special got his name in the league record books.
So far this season, Renko has logged a 14-8 record with a 4.07 ERA. He has started 23 games, hurled 163.2 innings and registered 102 strikeouts and 42 walks. | |
