| Breaking News | | Friday, September 23rd, 1977: Skaggs 5-5 for Missionaries Dave Skaggs exploded for a barrage of base hits today at KGML Default 8. The Saint Paul catcher had a field day in the 6-4 triumph over the Brooklyn Shipwrights, finishing up with a 5-5 day and a spot in the league record book.
"My hitting philosophy is pretty simple," he said. "I focus on just seeing the ball and I try to get a good pitch."
Well, Skaggs must have focused at least 5 times and apparently got some good pitches, too. It was one of his best days ever with the bat.
D. Skaggs singled in the 2nd, singled in the 4th, singled in the 5th, hit a two-run single in the 6th and singled in the 8th.
This season Skaggs is batting .245 with 120 hits and 2 home runs. He has scored 31 times and has 44 RBI. | | Sunday, September 11th, 1977: Shipwrights Blanked by Christenson In an almost effortless performance, Larry Christenson of the Rats shot down the Shipwrights 5-0 on a 3-hit shutout.
His skipper said, "Larry was just locating so well and using his pitches...not leaving anything over the plate."
Christenson recorded 4 strikeouts and 2 walks in a strong outing.
In the postgame press conference, the Brooklyn manager said, "When he needed to make pitches, he elevated his game like he can and we couldn't get a key hit off him."
This year Christenson has a 6-10 mark in 22 starts with a 4.00 ERA. He has given up 161 hits in 155.1 innings, struck out 89 and issued 51 walks. Opposing clubs have compiled a .269 batting average against him. | | Tuesday, September 6th, 1977: Torrez Baffles Atlanta Mike Torrez was stingy with runs in his latest outing against the Rebels. He shut them out 5-0 on 4 hits with 4 strikeouts and 2 walks.
The Brooklyn manager said, "Mike was very aggressive tonight. He threw everything he had with a lot of confidence."
The losing manager had praise, too. "He was throwing strikes with all his pitches and mixing it up well. Torrez has a sneaky fastball, and whatever that offspeed pitch was, it was keeping our timing off."
This season Torrez has compiled a 13-11 record with a 3.20 ERA in 28 starts. | | | Injuries | | Player | Injury | Out for... | Disabled List Status | | P Dwight Bernard | strained elbow ligament | 3-4 weeks | Not on DL | | CF Garry Maddox | torn anterior cruciate ligament | 4-5 months | On DL, eligible for return | | | Team Information | | Record overall | 77-85, .475 PCT | | Position in Division | 4th, 28.0 GB | | Record at home | 34-47, .420 PCT | | Record on the road | 43-38, .531 PCT | | Record in X-inning games | 9-11, .450 PCT | | Record in one-run games | 26-27, .491 PCT | | Record versus LHP | 26-27, .491 PCT | | Record versus RHP | 51-58, .468 PCT | | Record last 10 games | 4-6, .400 PCT | | Record in April | 17-11, .607 PCT | | Record in May | 14-15, .483 PCT | | Record in June | 8-17, .320 PCT | | Record in July | 14-15, .483 PCT | | Record in August | 14-14, .500 PCT | | Record in September | 10-13, .435 PCT |
