Monday, October 3rd, 1977: Fuentes Tags Bears 5 Hits
5 hits in a game doesn't happen every day. Houston's Tito Fuentes had a very special day against the Bears when everything came together for him and he did just that -- collected 5 hits in 5 at-bats -- and led the Houston Razorbacks to a 17-7 win at The Hunting Grounds.

"I'm just out there to try and help the team win," Fuentes said after the game, "I had some real good at-bats today. I made good, solid contact and luckily no one caught 'em."

T. Fuentes hit a two-run single in the 2nd, singled in the 4th, hit an RBI double in the 5th, hit a two-run single in the 6th and hit a two-run home run off T. Murphy in the 8th.

In 1977 Fuentes is batting .330 with 3 home runs and 45 RBIs.
Monday, September 19th, 1977: Automakers Whitewash Bears
All went well for Victor Starffin of the Detroit Automakers as he pitched his team to a 3-0 shutout victory over the Newark Bears, limiting them to 6 hits while ringing up 13 strikeouts and surrendering no walks.

In the postgame interview, both managers had glowing things to say about Starffin.

His manager described him this way: "He's got a good selection of pitches he can throw at a guy. He changes speed, gives different looks to different hitters. When he's on his game, he's quite a handful."

The Newark skipper said, "He doesn't give you anything twice. It's a guessing game with him and today my club was always guessing wrong."

Checking out his stats for the season, Starffin has racked up 23 wins and 13 losses in 40 starts, 2.47 ERA and struck out 289 batters in 331.1 innings.
Saturday, September 17th, 1977: Bears Get Shutout Win Over Atlanta
Cy Young bent a little, but he didn't break against the Rebels. The Newark pitcher hurled a 4-hit 1-0 shutout in a fine performance, surrendering 2 walks and putting up 8 strikeouts.

"Cy is good at getting out of jams," his manager told reporters after the game. "He's almost more effective when he gets guys on base or gets behind in the count, because he uses your aggressiveness against you."

Season-to-date Young has rung up 24 wins and 7 losses in 35 appearances. He has an ERA of 2.43 and has fanned 205 batters in 274.1 innings.
