| Breaking News | | Saturday, September 17th, 1977: Bears Get Shutout Win Over Atlanta Cy Young bent a little, but he didn't break against the Rebels. The Newark pitcher hurled a 4-hit 1-0 shutout in a fine performance, surrendering 2 walks and putting up 8 strikeouts.
"Cy is good at getting out of jams," his manager told reporters after the game. "He's almost more effective when he gets guys on base or gets behind in the count, because he uses your aggressiveness against you."
Season-to-date Young has rung up 24 wins and 7 losses in 35 appearances. He has an ERA of 2.43 and has fanned 205 batters in 274.1 innings. | | Thursday, September 15th, 1977: Chicago Blanked by Atlanta "Good pitching beats good hitting" is an old baseball adage.
Well, good pitching also beats bad batting.
In his postgame interview the Chicago manager said, "Fergie Jenkins made us look real bad today. He was outstanding. He was down in the zone with all his pitches. Everything was sinking."
Jenkins had 10 strikeouts, 1 walk and allowed only 3 hits as the Atlanta Rebels whitewashed the Chicago Rats 3-0.
In the 1977 season Jenkins has recorded a 4-11 mark. In 16 starts he has fanned 105 batters in 163.2 innings with a 2.97 ERA. | | Tuesday, September 6th, 1977: Torrez Baffles Atlanta Mike Torrez was stingy with runs in his latest outing against the Rebels. He shut them out 5-0 on 4 hits with 4 strikeouts and 2 walks.
The Brooklyn manager said, "Mike was very aggressive tonight. He threw everything he had with a lot of confidence."
The losing manager had praise, too. "He was throwing strikes with all his pitches and mixing it up well. Torrez has a sneaky fastball, and whatever that offspeed pitch was, it was keeping our timing off."
This season Torrez has compiled a 13-11 record with a 3.20 ERA in 28 starts. | | | | Team Information | | Record overall | 84-78, .519 PCT | | Position in Division | 2nd, 19.0 GB | | Record at home | 42-39, .519 PCT | | Record on the road | 42-39, .519 PCT | | Record in X-inning games | 5-12, .294 PCT | | Record in one-run games | 19-35, .352 PCT | | Record versus LHP | 26-22, .542 PCT | | Record versus RHP | 58-56, .509 PCT | | Record last 10 games | 6-4, .600 PCT | | Record in April | 17-11, .607 PCT | | Record in May | 17-12, .586 PCT | | Record in June | 13-12, .520 PCT | | Record in July | 14-15, .483 PCT | | Record in August | 11-17, .393 PCT | | Record in September | 12-11, .522 PCT |
